Not just skiing: 5 alternatives for your winter vacation in Val Gardena

The winter vacations are undoubtedly the time of year that many look forward to. There are those who can’t wait to jump into the most arduous black runs, and those who simply like to spend time surrounded by the fresh mountain air.

Whatever your motivation, you should know that Val Gardena offers multiple activities for your white holiday that you probably haven't considered yet.

1. Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is an alternative to hiking on skis that allows you to serenely reach the Sella Pass with its unique backdrops and breathtaking views.

Snowshoeing routes in this area are diverse, allowing you to spend unforgettable days in contact with nature

Some of the parks in the area, such as the Puez-Odle Nature Park and the Seiser Alm Park, are conveniently accessible by ski lifts.

2. Stargazing at night

Admiring the starry sky from the top of the Dolomites is definitely one of the experiences you cannot miss.

In Val Gardena, you will have the opportunity to enjoy this view even more closely. Thanks to outings organized by a trained astronomer, you will be guided to discover the starry sky with the help of powerful telescopes too.

3. Down sledding

A fun alternative to skiing that can be exciting without too much effort is sledding.

In Val Gardena, you can take advantage of the Rasciesa funicular cable railway, which takes you from Ortisei to the homonymous mountain lodge at over 2,200 meters above sea level.

From here you can whizz down by toboggan to the midway station after a 3 km slope, a stretch that can be repeated as many times as you like, thanks to the possibility of ascending with the lift.

Again by sledding, you can slide down to the valley for another 3 km, arriving at the Val d'Anna refuge, just above Ortisei.

4. Exploring by fat bike

Val Gardena Active Events offers guided "Fat bike" rides to cycling enthusiasts: a unique opportunity to discover Vallunga by pedaling through the snow with or without a bike guide.

Evening rides include routes to the top of Sella Pass, where you can enjoy a typical mountain dinner and descend on the starlit beaten paths.

5. On the Dolomites by helicopter

For those eager for thrills out of the ordinary, the helicopter ride over the Dolomites is the perfect choice!

Helicopter tours depart from Pontives (and in winter also from Passo Gardena) to appreciate the Dolomites - UNESCO World Heritage Site - from above, and you can even get dropped off in another valley, then ski back to the starting point.
